The Citi Foundation and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship have teamed up to help youth in 10 cities “make their own job” through the development of an entrepreneurial mindset critical to succeeding in a 21st century economy and workforce. Additionally, resources for all young people interested in making their own jobs will be made available through a fun and engaging gaming experience at www.makeyourjob.org.
NFTE BizCamps® are two-week intensive entrepreneurship programs designed to unlock the entrepreneurial mindset in youth as each participant builds a full plan for an original business idea of their own. Students cover all aspects of what it takes to start a business including learning about opportunity recognition, market research, sales and business financials. Through the process and a series of project-based learning activities integrated in the program they learn to think and act like entrepreneurs – see an opportunity, act on it, persevere and learn from setbacks and change course in ways that lead to success. BizCamps® culminate in a business plan competition judged by local high profile entrepreneurs and executives. This summer, thanks to the support of the Citi Foundation, 18 camps will serve 450 young people in 10 cities across the U.S.:
- Bridgeport (CT)
- Los Angeles
- New York City
- San Francisco
- Washington, D.C.
Startup Summer is NFTE’s business accelerator program. Young people who have already completed NFTE’s core entrepreneurship program either in their classroom or through a BizCamp® are eligible to apply. Participants are led through all aspects of creating their business and given seed capital to actually start operations over the course of the summer. Startup Summer also acts as a summer job for the participants as they are paid to participate. By actually starting a business, and practicing the skills of an entrepreneur, participants deepen their understanding and application of the entrepreneurial mindset which will be vital to their future economic success. Through a final investment panel, participants are given the opportunity to secure additional capital to support their ongoing enterprise. With the support of the Citi Foundation, the program will serve 35 young people New York City, more than doubling its reach from last summer, and Startup Summer will launch in Los Angeles serving 15 young entrepreneurs.
MakeYourJob.org is a dynamic, youth-centered web experience that converts key aspects of NFTE’s entrepreneurship program into a game and rewards-based experience that demonstrates how to turn one’s hobby or interest into a business. By offering our unique content, integrated online games and tools, access to expert video advice and a peer community to students for free, NFTE will reach a vast array of young who need help making their own jobs as they face a weak summer jobs market. MakeYourJob.org will launch in May.
