For LaToya Rowell, a member of the NFTE National Board of Directors and Vice President, National Community Affairs Manager at Comerica Bank, volunteering isn’t just about giving back—it’s about making a lasting impact. When she discovered NFTE in 2020, she knew she had found the perfect opportunity to combine her passion for financial education with meaningful community engagement. “Witnessing firsthand the impact one person can make inspired me to volunteer,” she shares. “Financial education is crucial, especially in underserved communities. When I saw NFTE’s mission aligned with Comerica’s goals, partnering with them was an easy decision.”

Her career in financial services has given her a front-row seat to the transformative power of entrepreneurship. She has seen firsthand how business ownership uplifts individuals and entire communities. “Entrepreneurs drive economic growth. Volunteering with NFTE allows me to support the next generation of business owners. There’s no better feeling than knowing your efforts could change someone’s future.”
She saw that impact during an Innovation Day at Comerica BusinessHQ™. LaToya was coaching a student team and quickly noticed that the girls in her group were more hesitant to share their ideas. She saw an opportunity to help them find their voices. “I made it my mission to bring them out of their shells. By the end of the day, they were engaged, confident, and smiling. I don’t remember if our team won, but I remember their transformation.”

Experiences like this reinforce LaToya’s belief that entrepreneurship is a powerful force for change. “Entrepreneurs understand their communities’ needs and create solutions that promote growth and resilience. NFTE empowers young women to see beyond their front doors. They gain confidence and, most importantly, learn to advocate for themselves and their ideas.”
To young women considering starting their own businesses, LaToya offers simple yet powerful advice: “Start a business aligned with your passion—it will keep you motivated and committed. Build strong relationships—success isn’t just about what you know; it’s also about who you know.”
She also stresses the importance of support from the business community. “Providing equal opportunities, mentorship, and funding access is crucial. If you can see her, you can be her.”

Looking back on her own career journey, LaToya shares one lesson she wishes she had learned sooner: “Don’t wait for the ‘perfect’ time to make a move. Seize opportunities, but don’t skip steps—each stage builds your foundation.”
Through her work with NFTE, LaToya is helping shape the future of entrepreneurship. “Entrepreneurial leadership fosters creativity and resilience, creating spaces where everyone can thrive. By investing in young entrepreneurs, we’re shaping the future.” Her dedication continues to inspire, helping ensure the next generation has the tools, confidence, and support they need to turn their ideas into reality.
